A2 Advanced Portfolio Evaluation question 1

The first question of my evaluation is:

In what ways do your music video, CD digipack and music magazine advertisement use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real music videos, CD digipacks and music magazine advertisements?

All three of the media products (music video, CD digipack and music magazine advertisement) that I produced for A2 Media Studies use forms and conventions of real music videos, CD digipacks and music magazine advertisements.

Prior to producing all three of my media products I researched existing music videos, CD digipacks and music magazine advertisements. This allowed me to see what existing music videos, CD digipacks and music magazine advertisements for my chosen artist and same genre of music looked like. I realised that one thing that all music videos, CD digipacks and music magazine advertisements for my chosen artist Colbie Caillat have the artist in them. Another thing they all have in common is that they all seem to have summer incorporated in them somehow.

Forms and conventions used in my music video
The first convention of a real music video that I used was having the artist in the music video. All of Colbie Caillat’s music videos include her in them. I included this because I thought this would be the best way to represent the artist in my music video. The second convention of a real music video was including lip synching. This was also one of the things that Colbie Caillat has in all of her music videos. Another reason for this is that I thought it would make my music video look more professional. The third and last convention I used in my music is the use of the typical mise-en-scene for my chosen artist Colbie Caillat. It was very important to me to make this convention as accurate as possible in my music video. This is because my chosen song has a very happy and summer feel to it and I thought it was important to portray this is in my music video. The first type of mise-en-scene I used is props. In my music video I decided to have the person portraying the artist play the guitar. The reason for this is that in all of Colbie Caillat’s music videos, she plays an acoustic guitar. The second type of mise-en-scene I used is costume. I chose to have the person in my music video wearing a white sun dress and white sandals. The reason for this is that Colbie Caillat comes across as a “summery” person and I thought that my chosen outfit portrayed her in a “summery” way very well.

Forms and conventions used in both my ancillary tasks
The first convention of real CD digipacks and music magazine advertisements that I used was again having the artist on the front. The reason for this choice is that this allows people to recognise the artist by the photograph. The second convention I used in both my ancillary tasks is mise-en-scene particularly in make-up and hair. Colbie Caillat always has wears very little make-up and always has curly or wavy hair. I found that these were her “signature looks” and so I wanted to portray them in my ancillary tasks.

She then auditioned for American Idol where she was rejected at the pre-audition and was unable to sing for the judges. she then auditioned a second time the following year she sang her original song “bubbly” and was once again rejected. However Colbie was glad by the decisions of the judges. She expressed gratitude to them fro this saying “I was shy. I was nervous. I didn't look the greatest. I wasn't ready yet. I was glad when i auditioned, that they said no”.

Ancillary Task 1 Update!!!!

I was not able to take pictures of Badria this weekend as planned. This is because Badria has a stye in her eye which makes it so i cannot apply make up to her face and also because she is unconfortable for this to show up on pictures. We are now waiting for the situations to improve in order to make further progress.

Split Screens!!!!

In a recent lesson we were taught how to create splits screens.A split screen is the visible division of the screen.I found them a really good idea and plan maybe to use them in my music video. I think that they would be a great way to show different times of day or maybe different actions done by the same person.

Whilst researching split screens i came across a picture that i really liked and thought it was a idea and i think i may attempt to do something similar in my music video as i think it may be very
effective.

Here is the picture i came across

Rolling Stone Magazine!!!!

Rolling Stone is a magazine based in the U.S. The magazine is devoted to music, politics, and popular culture. It was founded in San Francisco in 1967 by Jann Wenner ( editor and publisher) and Ralph J. Gleason.

The magazine was known for its political coverage in the 1970’s. The magazine then changed their format in the 1990’s to appeal to younger generation of readers often focusing on young television or films cators and pop music. This led to a lot of criticism. However in recent years the magazine has chaged back to its original mix of contents.

To get the magazine started Jann Wenner borrowed $7, 500 form his family. In the first edition of the magazine Jann Wenner wrote that Rolling Stone was not just about music but also about the attitudes that music embraces. Since then the printed format of the magazine has gone through a lot of changes. The first publications in 1967 to 1972 were in folded tabloid newspaper format with no staples and black ink and one single colour highlight that changed each edition. Then in 1973 editions were done on 4 colour press in a different newsprint size .In 1980 it became a gloss paper large format magazine. And present time editions are regular sized magazines.

Ancillary Task 2

I have decided to use Rolling Stone magazine for my Ancillary task 2 which is to create a magazine advertisement for my choosen artist and their album.

Friday 14 January 2011

Ancillary Task 1 and Ancillary Task 2

I have scheduled a date where i will be taking pictures for my digipack and magazine advertisement with Badria El-Alami. I have been planning some outfits for Badria to wear for the pictures. I will also be styling Badria's hair and doing her make-up for the photos. I plan to take pictures of the outfits, hair and makeup and posting them on here ASAP.

Casting for music video!!!!

I have chosen to have only one main character in my music video and then have extras. I have decided also that i would use the main character on both my Ancillary Task 1 and Ancillary Task 2. I have chosen Badria El-Alami as my main character.

My idea for the music video!!

The song that i have picked is about a party that the main character had had the friday night before. My idea for my music video for Katy Perry's song 'Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)' is to film the main character walking forward from the present to the past. However this wont be realised until the end of the music video where it shows that the whole video was actually main character rewinding a video on the TV and watching it again to relive that friday.

Practising to do digipacks

I have been practising designing digipacks for my Ancillary Task 1 using pictures found on the internet. I am currently working on my final digipack using pictures that i have taken myself.

Digipacks

Digipacks are a type of CD packaging made out of card or other heavy paper/cardboard material. Digipacks can flip open like a book, or it can have three parts, so that one part of the packaging opens to the right and one part to the left, with the CD in the center middle part. Usually the part that holds the CD is made out of plastic to ensure that the cd is safer and will not fall out as easily.

Digipacks were first created by MeadWestvaco, and their product, called Digi-Pak, is trademarked. As the digi-pak became more popular and began to be used by more manufacturers, the generic "digipack" came to be used to describe all soft CD packaging.

Pros
• They look nice, and many bands and labels like to use them. for aesthetic reasons.
• The 3 part packaging allows for more design options.
• They don’t crack like cases made out of plastic.
• They are more environmentally friendly.

Cons
• More expensive than traditional liner notes and jewel cases.
• Will eventually rip and paper begins to peel away.
• The trays in digipacks break more easily.
