A2 Advanced Portfolio Evaluation question 1
Prior to producing all three of my media products I researched existing music videos, CD digipacks and music magazine advertisements. This allowed me to see what existing music videos, CD digipacks and music magazine advertisements for my chosen artist and same genre of music looked like. I realised that one thing that all music videos, CD digipacks and music magazine advertisements for my chosen artist Colbie Caillat have the artist in them. Another thing they all have in common is that they all seem to have summer incorporated in them somehow.
Forms and conventions used in my music video
The first convention of a real music video that I used was having the artist in the music video. All of Colbie Caillat’s music videos include her in them. I included this because I thought this would be the best way to represent the artist in my music video. The second convention of a real music video was including lip synching. This was also one of the things that Colbie Caillat has in all of her music videos. Another reason for this is that I thought it would make my music video look more professional. The third and last convention I used in my music is the use of the typical mise-en-scene for my chosen artist Colbie Caillat. It was very important to me to make this convention as accurate as possible in my music video. This is because my chosen song has a very happy and summer feel to it and I thought it was important to portray this is in my music video. The first type of mise-en-scene I used is props. In my music video I decided to have the person portraying the artist play the guitar. The reason for this is that in all of Colbie Caillat’s music videos, she plays an acoustic guitar. The second type of mise-en-scene I used is costume. I chose to have the person in my music video wearing a white sun dress and white sandals. The reason for this is that Colbie Caillat comes across as a “summery” person and I thought that my chosen outfit portrayed her in a “summery” way very well.
Forms and conventions used in both my ancillary tasks
The first convention of real CD digipacks and music magazine advertisements that I used was again having the artist on the front. The reason for this choice is that this allows people to recognise the artist by the photograph. The second convention I used in both my ancillary tasks is mise-en-scene particularly in make-up and hair. Colbie Caillat always has wears very little make-up and always has curly or wavy hair. I found that these were her “signature looks” and so I wanted to portray them in my ancillary tasks.

Practising to do digipacks
Digipacks
Digipacks were first created by MeadWestvaco, and their product, called Digi-Pak, is trademarked. As the digi-pak became more popular and began to be used by more manufacturers, the generic "digipack" came to be used to describe all soft CD packaging.
Pros
• They look nice, and many bands and labels like to use them. for aesthetic reasons.
• The 3 part packaging allows for more design options.
• They don’t crack like cases made out of plastic.
• They are more environmentally friendly.
Cons
• More expensive than traditional liner notes and jewel cases.
• Will eventually rip and paper begins to peel away.
• The trays in digipacks break more easily.
